Is that possible? Or do the logistics of a school building prevent this? Could you have buildings that are used by pupils part of the time, and by other groups/businesses at other times? I love the idea that this would completely embed a school in its local community and make use of a building which is potentially empty for significant periods of time

This was tried by Blair/Brown and their "Extended Schools" initiative. Didn't really work. The H&S obligations for school centre around Control Measures and when you invite people from outside the school community into the building you lose an element of control. A critical tool in ensuring schools meet their safeguarding obligations is the Single Central Register which ensures every adult in the building is logged and all the appropriate checks are in place. Again this is about tight control. Then there is the premises itself. My school is PFI which means that any damages are charged to the school. This needs to be managed carefully to avoid additional budgetary pressures. Good teachers carefully manage their classrooms, furniture, tachnology, displays & resources to create a positive learning environment. Locking everything away every evening/weekend makes this much more challenging.
